Backstory
During Deaf Way I in 1989, as the producer and chair of the Festival and the arts program, Dr. Norman coordinated the arts program and invited deaf people, active in the film and television industry to be included as speakers. At Dr. Norman's request Dr. Barbara Kannapell and her team assembled a wide array of videos and the screening of these international videos were limited and for the most part viewed in a hotel reception area. For Deaf Way II (2002), Dr. Norman with a team of students headed the full cinema festival which was held at the Gallaudet University Kellogg Conference Center, Swindell Auditorium, National Geographic Society Auditorium and at a downtown movie theatre house. A total of 55 films and videos were scheduled in addition to those shown at the International Deaf Club.
Preparation for The WORLDEAF Cinema Festival began in 2007 with a proposal from Dr. Norman to the Gallaudet University Provost's Office. Upon approval, a committee was formed to begin the initial planning. The committe consists of members from the faculty, staff, students and community.
